Clarivate Analytics acquires Kopernio, bringing one-click access to millions of research articles.

Date of news item: 19 April 2018

Clarivate Analytics have announced the acquisition of research startup Kopernio. Kopernio is a free browser plugin and web-based platform that provides convenient and legal one-click access to academic journal articles that a researcher’s institution has subscribed to, both on- and off-campus. Its ground-breaking AI-powered technology integrates with institutional journal subscriptions and existing library technology and automatically identifies a user's entitlements, enabling them to access millions of journal articles at the point of need and across the web. Kopernio helps save researchers both time and frustration when accessing the legal full-text of an article (Publisher Journal Article /Version of Record), and makes researchers more efficient when downloading and evaluating journal articles.

Kopernio increases the reach and impact of the publisher journal article, driving downloads of the publisher’s version of the article, and helping publishers re-capture content usage currently lost to third-party sites. Kopernio also tracks the impact of the official Open Access publications meaning that publishers can demonstrate the true reach of their published content to authors of open access articles. Publishers will also benefit from Kopernio usage data that measures the true value of their content to users, librarians and the public at large.

It was founded by Jan Reichelt and Ben Kaube, the co-founders of Mendeley and Newsflo, respectively. As part of the acquisition, Reichelt and Kaube have also joined Clarivate Analytics—Reichelt as Managing Director of Web of Science, Kaube as Managing Director of Kopernio.
